Online Gaming Explosion
Written by Dawkus
Saturday, 14 June 2003
A Cold Blooded Reception I remember my first online gaming experience. It was Warcraft II by Blizzard. I played countless games of Warcraft II with my friends, until a game called Diablo caught my eye. I eventually turned to Starcraft (an RTS (Real Time Strategy) very similar to Warcraft II except with a sci-fi theme). Recently, I have been playing a lot of Never Winter Nights, a roleplaying game based on Dungeons and Dragons. What sets NWN apart from the other D&D based computer titles in the past is that you have an extensive editor at your disposal that allows you to create your own games. With the addition of a voice chat program, we are getting very close to seeing long distance role playing. I have long thought that this was the main problem with most fantasy computer games. They loooked rather nice graphic-wise, but there was no meat to the story. Now, we can role play long distance, and create our own stories using NWN. Things certainly have come a long way since the days Warcraft II and Diablo, and with interest and participation in online gaming growing every day, the future never looked brighter.
